RUNNING THE PRACTICE

Where busy season hours really go, and how to get them back.

Most of the strain in busy season isn't the hard work. It's the typing in between.

The Selah Systems team · 2 minute read

Ask a firm owner where the hours go in busy season and you'll hear the same list. Chasing documents. Answering client questions. Reviewing returns. And typing, a lot of typing.

Most of that list needs a person. Typing the numbers off a client's forms and into your tax software is the one item that doesn't, and it's often the biggest.

Look at who is doing the typing

In a lot of firms, data entry falls on whoever has a free hour, including the people you'd rather have reviewing, advising, or talking to clients. Every hour they spend keying a form is an hour they aren't spending on the work only they can do.

"Separate the typing from the judgment, and busy season starts to look different."

Separate the typing from the judgment

A useful exercise is to split your busy season work into two piles. One pile needs professional judgment. The other is moving numbers from one place to another. The second pile is where the hours are easiest to win back.

Where Kairos fits

Kairos is built for that second pile. It types your clients' forms into ProSeries or Drake and leaves a return ready for review, so your team starts from entered data instead of a blank screen.

If you want to see what that looks like on a real screen, book a 30 minute demo.
